Classification of Makeup Cosmetics

What is a cosmetic?

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) defines cosmetics by their intended use, as "articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body...for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance" [FD&C Act, sec. 201(i)]. Among the products included in this definition are skin moisturizers, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail polishes, eye and facial makeup preparations, cleansing shampoos, permanent waves, hair colours, and deodorants, as well as any substance intended for use as a component of a cosmetic product.

In light of this definition, we can classify cosmetics as the following types

1 Makeup products: The function of such products is mainly used for human beautification, promoting attractiveness and altering appearance. We can classify those makeup products as lip series, eye series, face series and nail series. This catalogue contains lipstick, lipgloss, eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner, foundation, concealer, highlight, blush, nail polish etc.

2 Skincare products: The function of such products are mainly used for human cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance. We can classify these skincare products as cleaning the skin, nourishing the skin, protecting skin, etc. This catalog contains moisturizers, face mists, face masks, cleansers, makeup removers, etc.

3 Sweet Atmosphere products: The function of such products are mainly used for promoting attractiveness. We can classify this sweet atmosphere as perfume, Cologne, etc.

4 Washing base personal care products: The function of such products are mainly used for the human body and hair cleansing and nourishing. We can classify these items as shampoo, body lotion, body gel, mousse, etc.

5 Oral care products: The function of such products is mainly used for human oral care. We can classify these items as toothpaste, toothpowder, mouthwash, etc.

6 Special functional products: The function of such products are mainly used for special functions such as sunscreen,anti-acne, whitening,hair-restorer, etc. This catalogue is between drug and cosmetic products.
