Knowledge on Skins

Functions and layers of skin

The skin is the largest organ of the body. The skin and its derivatives (hair, nails, sweat and oil glands) make up the integumentary system. One of the main functions of the skin is protection. It protects the body from external factors such as bacteria, chemicals, and temperature. The skin contains secretions that can kill bacteria and the pigment melanin provides a chemical pigment defense against ultraviolet light that can damage skin cells.

Another important function of the skin is body temperature regulation. When the skin is exposed to a cold temperature, the blood vessels in the dermis constrict. This allows the blood which is warm, to bypass the skin. The skin then becomes the temperature of the cold it is exposed to. Body heat is conserved since the blood vessels are not diverting heat to the skin anymore. Among its many functions the skin is an incredible organ always protecting the body from external agents.

Generally speaking, there are 3 layers of skin, Epidermis, Dermis and Hypodermis. Because all the cosmetics will contact the skin, we shall have some knowledge of the skin.

Skin types

Generally speaking, there are 5 types of skins. Knowing different features of skin can be helpful for customers to choose SUITABLE cosmetic products

1. NORMAL SKIN (BALANCED MOISTURE, EVEN TONE AND BLEMISH-FREE)

Normal skin has an ideal balance between oil and hydration levels therefore skin is neither greasy nor dry. This skin type can tolerate exfoliation and more potent active ingredients. Proper protective and preventative care in the form of daily antioxidant and sunscreen use maintains the health and appearance of normal skin—and prevents future damage.

2. OILY SKIN(OVERACTIVE OIL GLANDS CAUSES EXCESS SHINE AND BREAKOUTS)

Oily skin is associated with excess oils and pores caused by overactive sebaceous glands. The SkinCeuticals product line for this condition helps minimize oiliness and congestion as they protect skin and help prevent further damage.

3. COMBINATION SKIN(DRY IN SOME AREAS, OILY IN OTHERS)

Combination skin is dry in some areas and oily in others. This imbalance is affected by environmental factors and genetics. The T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) is usually oily, while patches of dryness may be found on the cheeks. SkinCeuticals offers products that provide oil control and moisture without clogging pores restoring balance to skin.
